Established in 1992, the 299th Vasyl Nikiforov Tactical Aviation Brigade, based in Mykolayiv, houses diverse Su-25 front-line attack aircraft, affectionately dubbed 'the Rook'. This single-seat plane is renowned for its precision strikes. In 2012, it was recognized as the Ukrainian Air Force's top aviation base. Since 2014, the Brigade has fiercely defended Ukraine's eastern territories, including Marynivka and Illovaysk. Despite heavy enemy fire, they remain undeterred, fighting until the end. In a daring maneuver, a pilot once flew a damaged plane to the Dnipro, jettisoning unexploded ordnance, and landed without landing gear, despite injuries. The soldiers then promptly returned to combat, safeguarding Ukrainian soil.
