Patches on the scalp: why they happen and how to stop them by Jini Dewliya, Founder – Jini the Artistic Unisex Salon Training Academy, Indore MD – JININDORI Organic Products
When we talk about hair problems, most people immediately think of hair fall or dandruff. But there is another very common issue that many ignore – patches on the scalp.
These patches are usually small areas on your scalp that feel rough, itchy, or look different from the rest of your skin. Many people confuse them with simple dandruff, but very often, they are a result of improper hair care.
In this post, I’ll explain why these patches appear and simple things you can do to prevent them.
Why do patches appear in the hair?
In most cases, patches on the scalp start because we do not give our hair and scalp the basic care they need.
Many people:
- Do not wash their hair regularly according to their scalp type
- Ignore sweat and moisture on the scalp
- Scratch their scalp aggressively when it feels itchy
When there is too much moisture, sweat, or product build-up on the scalp and we keep scratching or not cleaning it properly, the skin slowly becomes irritated. Over time, this irritation can turn into visible patches.
Very often:
- People see flakes or rough skin and immediately assume: “This is dandruff.”
- But in reality, these patches are often caused by not taking proper care of the scalp, not just by dandruff alone.
So, while dandruff can be one reason, poor hair hygiene and wrong habits are a big factor too.
How to prevent patches on the scalp
The good news is that with a few simple changes in your hair-care routine, you can reduce and even prevent these patches.
1. Always keep your hair and scalp clean
Cleanliness is the first step to a healthy scalp.
- Make sure your hair is washed regularly.
- If your scalp tends to get very oily or sweaty, you can wash your hair every day or every alternate day using a mild shampoo.
- This helps remove sweat, excess oil, dust, and product build-up that can irritate the scalp.
Remember, the goal is balance – not too oily, not too dry.
2. Use less shampoo, not more
A very common mistake I see in clients is thinking that:
“More shampoo means cleaner hair.”
This is not true.
- Using too much shampoo can strip away natural oils and make your scalp dry and sensitive.
- A dry scalp is more likely to become itchy, flaky, and patchy.
So:
- Take only a small amount of shampoo,
- Dilute it with a little water in your hand,
- Then gently massage it into the scalp.
Your scalp needs gentle cleansing, not harsh scrubbing.
3. Prefer sulphate-free shampoos
The type of shampoo you use also matters.
- Sulphate-based shampoos create a rich foam, but they can be too harsh, especially with regular use.
- Over time, they may weaken the hair roots and dry out the scalp.
- Using a sulphate-free shampoo, especially if:
- Your scalp is sensitive
- You already have itching or patchy areas
- Your hair is chemically treated or colored
That’s why I always recommend: A gentle, sulphate-free formula helps clean the hair without damaging the roots.
4. Be careful when your scalp feels itchy
We all feel like scratching our head sometimes, especially when it’s sweaty or itchy. But:
- Hard scratching with nails can injure the scalp.
- When you keep scratching the same area again and again, it can lead to more irritation and more patches.
So, whenever your scalp feels itchy:
- Avoid using your nails.
- Instead, massage gently with your fingertips.
- If itching is frequent, it’s a sign that your scalp needs better cleansing or a milder product.
5. Consistent hair care keeps your scalp patch-free
Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp.
By following a simple, consistent routine:
- Keeping hair clean
- Using a mild, sulphate-free shampoo
- Not overusing shampoo
- Avoiding aggressive scratching
…you can keep your hair:
- Healthy
- Shiny
- And most importantly, free from scalp patches
Final thoughts
Scalp patches don’t appear overnight. They are usually the result of small mistakes we repeat every day:
- Not washing hair properly
- Ignoring sweat and moisture
- Using harsh products
- Scratching without thinking
With a little awareness and a few right habits, you can protect your scalp and enjoy better hair health.
If you’re facing continuous itching, severe patches, or hair loss in those areas, it’s always a good idea to consult a professional for a proper check-up.
